White Rabbit The inspiration for this bar's name is a Chinese milk candy that owner Jim Chu ate as a child. Free samples of this treat sit in bowls on the bamboo bar in what was formerly Idlewild—his kitchy, airplane-themed bar. Chu's tastes are clearly maturing:
The space was converted into a slick, all-white room, and Chu added fancy cocktails and quality Asian-inflected nibbles, like shrimp wontons and tempura chicken. Average drink: $7.

Elegant East Village Latin lounge that’s somewhat surprising to find in this dingy part of East Houston. The interior is chic and funky, with clean lines, spotless white walls, sleek metal bar stools and potted plants – stylish touches that easily compliment the food and drink. The menu is Latin-Asian, with some hot, spicy sauces to accompany the shrimp and the Cuban sandwiches. It’s the tasty drinks that regulars and surprised interlopers love however. Try their Paradise Cocktail made with coconut rum, mango and lime juice; and sample the Ginger Spice Martini as a freshener. Cuban son bands play some night and although the space is small and cosy, its heart is big as Havana. |

White Rabbit With its spotless, sleekly minimalist interior, White Rabbit offers a bit of welcome relief from the grime and bustle of Houston Street. On the pan-Latin/pan-Asian menu, otherwise ordinary grilled shrimp ($7) benefits from a dab of hot Sriracha sauce and even more from a Ginger Spice Martini ($9), while Cuban sandwiches ($7) find a worthy complement in the Paradise Cocktail (rum, coconut rum, mango and lime; $9-$10). If the art exhibits, house DJs, and occasional films (on flat screen, naturally) never quite attain the magic of Alice’s wonderland, the bar’s unique Manhattan ($9-$11), with its sweet southern synergy of Kentucky bourbon and Georgia peaches, will have you smiling like a Cheshire cat nevertheless.

“Sweet dreams. The name conjures up Alice in Wonderland, but the true inspiration for the new lounge White Rabbit is a milk-caramel candy that owner Jim Chu discovered in Chinatown when he was a child. Free samples of this treat sit in bowls on the bamboo bar in what was formerly Idlewild – Chu's kitschy, airplane-themed bar. His tastes are clearly maturing: He converted the place into a slick, all-white (and less clubby) room and added Asian-Latino nibbles like panko-crusted mini crab cakes and peking duck sandwich (pictures).
And you can now get fancy cocktails like a lychee daiquiri, swirled with fresh mango puree.

“Clean, neat, and chic perfectly describe the nearly sterile, ultra-mod décor and white-on-beige interior at White Rabbit. Low, modular seating in both the front and rear lounge areas, strips of mirrored wall paneling, and dropped-globe light fixtures lend a contemporary groovy air to this delightfully cover-free Lower East Side hipster’s paradise.
Chow down on their Asian- and Spanish-influenced meat, seafood, and cheese snack menu (under $10), or treat yourself to a selection from their champagne “by-the-glass” offerings ($7-$12). Beer and house wine are yours for the asking, reasonably priced at only $5 a bottle for domestic and import suds and $6 a glass for house red and white vino.” |

“THE NEWS In the news this week, The White Rabbit has opened at 145 East Houston Street (b/w Eldridge and Forsyth), 212-477-5005. Located right next to the Sunshine Cinema, The White Rabbit is a sleek and sexy bar and lounge owned by Jim Chu, who was a partner at Idle Wild, Torch and Den of Theives. Cocktails are the main draw˜there are Frozen Lychee Daquiris, Ginger Martinis, Saketinis, and about a dozen more˜and just in case you need a little bite, the menu features lots of drink-friendly snacks to keep you tossing Œem back way into the wee hours. There are killer mini burgers tucked between puffy square buns with crunchy, garlicky Gus's pickles, fat vegetables summer rolls with peanut curry dipping sauce, golden panko-crusted mini crab cakes with cucumber dill sauce, and adorable little mini empanadas. I love eating little food. Somehow, it makes me feel dainty. And I do like to feel dainty whenever possible because most of the time, I just ain't so dainty.” |
